Waterbeck House - Lake District plumbing: new bathrooms, cloakroom and re-piping
Tackling the plumbing in a house with a one hundred year history is always interesting. Find out how our team of local plumbers is getting on in one of the Lake district’s most well-regarded Arts & Crafts houses overlooking Lake Windermere.
Local plumbers commissioned for one of the Lake District’s finest Arts & Crafts properties.
At some point in an older property, the plumbing just has to come out or at least be re-aligned. Apparently simple jobs can end up being quite complicated if you are not sure where the pipework lays. That’s where experience comes in. Knowing how the job used to be done is of great value when it comes to renovations.
About the property:
Waterbeck is one of the Lake District’s finest Arts & Crafts houses. Built around 1912-1914, it was produced by a partnership between Windermere-based architect Dan Gibson and the building firm of Pattinsons, who also collaborated on Brockhole. Gibson often worked with Thomas Mawson so that the house and garden were built in tandem.
Waterbeck has retained nearly all of its original designs and features, with the main rooms featuring fine plasterwork ceilings, oak floors and panelling, stunning fireplaces and stone mullioned windows with views over the gardens to the fells and Lake Windermere beyond.
Plumbing services provided:
We are currently re-piping the hot and cold water for the whole property, installing a new central heating system (to include two boilers and cylinders and underfloor heating). We are also creating four new bathrooms and a cloakroom.
Project challenges and considerations:
When working on properties of this age and calibre, it’s vital to be sympathetic when modernising the plumbing.
It’s also vital not to under estimate the demands of property of this size and grandeur. Carefully planning a full hot and cold water system and central heating system well in advance is a critical step to avoid problems at the installation stage. It’s also necessary to be fully aware of the demands these systems will need to meet to ensure they are the right solution.
